The Ecocentre

Northfield Ecocentre was first opened to the public in March 2009 and has since become an essential part of Northfield's community. We are a friendly place where people can meet and learn from each other all aspects of sustainable living in our building which is packed full of energy saving, environmentally-friendly features and thought provoking displays.

Northfield Ecocentre aims to:

"Work with the community to find practical ways to live better and protect the environment."

We have put together a brief history of the Ecocentre with a description of some of the buildings features and some of the work we do, you can download this below.

A brief history of Northfield Ecocentre

In the summer of 2007 members of the Central England Area Quakers compiled “Northfield Ecocentre Project: Plan for the creation and operation of the project”. This led to the transformation of a derelict book shop on Church Road owned by the Quakers, which included refurbishing the existing building for a centre open to the public and creating an additional extension to provide office space.

The idea was to develop a building which would demonstrate best practice in energy and water conservation, and also include a wide range of displays to explain energy saving to the visiting public. In November 2009 the Ecocentre Management Committee agreed a strategic plan for the next two years. The four aims of this plan, to be reviewed in 2011, are:

1. To become a known example of good practice in the city
2. To be a trusted independent ‘sustainable living’ advice service
3. To help build a sustainable community
4. To secure future funding (2 further years)

The 2 year strategy details Northfield Ecocentre’s target audience as: individuals, families, community groups and businesses in the Northfield area and Quakers within the Area Meeting.

Secondary audiences include individuals, families, community groups and businesses in the wider Birmingham area as well as youth groups and schools.
