With the Rio Summit coming up on the 16th-22nd June 2012 (http://www.stopclimatechaos.org/rio-connection) we hope that the world leaders aren't too bogged down with the Olympic games to give our planet the attention she deserves.

There is much they can do on a global level but the biggest difference can be made by many people who make little changes to their lives.

So with this in mind we present the list of useful tips with the upcoming summer weather in mind.

As I mentioned on my first blog, I have been sent on a placement with the University of Warwick. I have now around half way through it and learning a lot. I am working on something called a 'Combined Heat and Power District Heating Scheme.' I'll give a short breakdown of what this means.

Help Design Our Commemorative Jubilee Quilt

To commemorate the Diamond Jubilee Northfield Ecocentre are creating a community quilt. Using recycled materials we will build a picture of the last 60 years.

Whether you are an experienced quilter or have never attempted something like this before, come along and get involved.

We will be working on the community quilt as part of our Big Lunch event on Saturday 2nd June.

If you want to learn the skills or practice quilting beforehand come along to our Quilting & Patchworking course this Saturday 12th May. For only £20 you can have a full day with an experienced quilter, Judith Jenner.

Coming to a Garden Near You Soon...!

We had a fantastic first session for our Grow Zone project in April. Our group turned up at 10.30 with tools, gardening gloves and loads of enthusiasm. Our first garden was in need of lots of attention to cut back the weeds and plants that were out of control. Anna had only recently moved into the property and being a busy Mum had not had chance to attend to the garden.

June is the Big Lunch month and this year again the Ecocentre invites you to spend a day sharing food, friendship and fun with the community!

This year, our Big Lunch will have a Brazilian touch as we are linking it to the celebrations taking place around the Rio+20 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 16 – 22 June, where world leaders will address sustainable development and global issues such as jobs, energy, cities, food, water and oceans. Please take a moment to watch this moving short film made by Stop Climate Chaos celebrating the last 20 years of environmental campaigning.

So come and share a Brazilian lunch (see here for ideas!), enjoy strolling through food related stalls from local people , get moved viewing climate change related short films and excited with some outdoor games, Ecokids craft activities and more to please everyone!
