Volunteer

Northfield Ecocentre relies on the generosity of its many volunteers who give so much of their time, skills and resources to help us make a difference in Northfield and the surrounding area. If you would like to get involved in the work that we do then check out our jobs page for information on any volunteer positions we are advertising for.

If you think you have a skill that would be of use to the Ecocentre but a relevant position isn’t advertised on our jobs page then please contact us with details of how you think you could help us and we’ll be in touch.

Meet some of our volunteers:

Andrew Watkins

Andrew (work experience):

My work experience at Northfield Ecocentre has been a great experience. I have met loads of new people, shared ideas and learnt lots of new things. I have learnt that saving energy is really important and growing your vegetables isn't that hard, but the thing i liked the most was building a greenhouse out of recycled materials with all the people in the gardening group, which was a lot of fun!

RachelRachel (Summer intern):

The Ecocentre is a fantastic place to learn about sustainability, to try new things and to meet lots of great people. Through participating in outreach events, I have seen firsthand the enthusiasm for the service the Ecocentre provides and it has been fantastic to tell people about all that we have going on. I have learnt that there are many more things than I thought that can be recycled, and that it can be really fun to repair unwanted items or even to make them into something completely new! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed volunteering here, especially getting to know the ladies who come along to the weekly sewing group and working in such a fun, friendly and dedicated team.

Sara (Summer intern):

Sara

Working as a summer intern at the Northfield Ecocentre has been inspirational, creative, challenging and hugely rewarding.

As a keen geography and geology student at the University of Birmingham, I’ve learnt about the principles of environmentalism, sustainability, ecology and energy efficiency to an academic level. I believe that the Ecocentre puts this scientific theory and science into practice at a community wide scale, leading by example and demonstrating how changes large and small can affect not just your local environment but on a large world scale too.

I have worked alongside other volunteers and interns on several outreach events during which i rekindled my passion for environmentalism; gained confidence when speaking to the general public, and improved my own knowledge of current environmental technologies, sustainable strategies and science. Most important to me personally, i have improved my knowledge in what the Ecocentre does and have seen firsthand how it can positively affect the local community.
